glycine

Simplest amino acid, and one of the main components of proteins. When purified, it is a sweet, colourless crystalline compound.

Glycine was found in space in 1994 in the star-forming region Sagittarius B2. The discovery is important because of its bearing on the origins of life on Earth. Glycine is the only biogenic amino acid that is not chiral.
