Town within the Ácoma Pueblo and Trust Lands in Cibola County, northwest New Mexico; population (1990) 2,600. Located 89 km/55 mi west-southwest of Albuquerque, on a 109 m/357 ft–high mesa, this pre-Columbian Keresan community, consisting of three-story stone and adobe buildings, is one of the oldest continuously occupied settlements in America. Discovered in 1540 by one of Francisco Coronado's captains, it became a Spanish mission in 1598. In 1680 it joined the Pueblo Revolt. It remains a popular tourist attraction.
