Alava

Province of northern Spain in the Basque Country autonomous community; area 3,046 sq km/1,176 sq mi; population (1995 est) 282,900. The largest and most southerly of the Basque provinces, it includes part of the Cantabrian Mountains, and tributaries of the River Ebro, including the Zadora. The mountains are wooded and rich in minerals. Products include cereals, flax, hemp, fruit, olive oil, and wine. The capital of Alava is Vitoria.
