Andros

Greek island, most northerly of the Cyclades; area 383 sq km/147 sq mi; population (1981) 9,000. It is 40 km/25 mi long, 12 km/7.5 mi wide, mountainous, and produces wine. The principal town, Andros, is situated on the east coast.

During the 7th century BC Andros colonized several places in Chalcidice, notably Stagira. From 200 to 133 BC the island belonged to Pergamum, and passed with that kingdom to Rome under the will of Attalus III (see Attalid dynasty).
