Århus (or Aarhus)

Seaport and second-largest city of Denmark, on the east coast overlooking the Kattegat strait; population (2003 est) 220,700. It is the capital of Århus county in Jylland (Jutland) and a shipping, industrial, and commercial centre. Industries include metals, machinery, beer, textiles, chemicals, ships, processed foods, and tobacco products.

History

One of Denmark's oldest cities, Århus was settled by Vikings and is first mentioned in the 10th century; it developed rapidly after it became an episcopal see in the 11th century. It declined after the Reformation (16th century), but it recovered its prosperity in the 18th century.

Features

The city is a cultural centre, with a university (1928), an outdoor museum of early Danish buildings, a theatre, and a large library. Features of interest include the Cathedral of St Clemens (begun 1201, largely rebuilt 15th century); Vor Frue Church (begun 11th century); and the town hall (1942), made of Norwegian marble.
