aedile

Magistrate in ancient Rome whose duties included the care of temples, public buildings and markets, and the supervision of public games.

The office was created in 494 BC with the appointment of two plebeian aediles, whose name was derived from the aedes or temple of Ceres, centre of the plebeian cult. With the appointment of two curule or patrician aediles in 367 BC, the office became representative of the whole people. It was elective, and its holders ranked next after the praetors.
