Ó Riórdáin, Seán (1916-1977)

Irish poet, born in Ballvourney, in the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking area) of west Cork. Considered one of the best modern Irish-language poets, Ó Riórdáin believed that writing is a form of prayer and a process of self-discovery. He had a strong influence on younger poets who wrote in Irish such as Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill. Collections of his poetry, which include Eireaball Spideoige (1952) and Brosna (1964), reflect a struggle with the nature of identity, language, and faith.

Diagnosed with tuberculosis in 1938, Ó Riórdáin often commented on the ironic relationship between his illness and his creative vitality.
