Öpik, Lembit (1965- )

UK Liberal Democrat politician. A member of Parliament since 1997, he was shadow spokesman for Northern Ireland (from 1997) and Wales (from 2001).

His diverse interests include astronomy (promoting awareness of the risk to the Earth posed by asteroids and meteors) and fox hunting (favouring regulation rather than a ban).

Born in Bangor, County Down, in Northern Ireland, the son of immigrants from Estonia, he studied philosophy at Bristol University. He worked as a personnel manager at Proctor and Gamble Ltd and was a councillor for Newcastle City Council before being elected an MP in 1997, representing the constituency of Montgomeryshire.
