écossaise

    0.12 sec.

écossaise

Dance long supposed to be of Scottish origin but no longer considered so. As a fashionable ballroom dance in the early 19th century, it was in fairly animated 2–4 time, about halfway between the polka and the galop in speed. Among the composers who cultivated it were Beethoven, Schubert, and Chopin. The German Schottisch (usually written Schottische in English) is the same thing.
