Tribute, or eulogy, in honour of a dead person, describing their good qualities and achievements.

At the French Academy éloges académiques were written by new members on their predecessors, and form a considerable branch of French literature; for example, the éloges of Baron Cuvier and Pierre Flourens. The French philosopher Denis Diderot wrote ‘Éloge de Richardson’ in praise of the English novelist Samuel Richardson.
