‘Choral Symphony’

Popular name for Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in D minor, Op. 125, on account of its last movement, a setting of Schiller's ode An die Freude/To Joy for solo quartet, chorus, and orchestra. It was composed about 1817–24 and was first performed in Vienna, Austria, on 7 May 1824. It is the first symphony to include voices.
