‘Killers, The’

Short story, published in Men Without Women (1928), by US writer Ernest Hemingway. When two killers arrive in a lunchroom to murder ‘the Swede’, young Nick Adams runs to warn him, and is stunned to find the former prizefighter passively waiting for death. A work of intense power and economy, it deals with Hemingway's major themes of virility and death.
