‘Miracle, The’| Nickname of Joseph Haydn's symphony no. 96, in D major (no. 4 of the ‘Salomon’ symphonies), written for London in 1791. The name is due to the story that a chandelier fell from the ceiling at the first performance, when the audience miraculously escaped injury; but in fact the accident occurred at the first performance of symphony no. 102 in B flat major (1794–95). |
