‘Resurrection’ Symphony

    0.03 sec.

‘Resurrection’ Symphony

Symphony by Gustav Mahler, no. 2 in C minor, for soprano, mezzo-soprano, chorus, and orchestra. It was composed 1888–94 and revised in 1910. The finale is a setting of Friedrich Klopstock's chorale Aufersteh'n/Resurrection. The work was written partly as a statement of Mahler's conversion to Roman Catholicism; he strongly felt that his Jewish origin was preventing him from gaining widespread acceptance. Mahler conducted its first performance in Berlin, on 13 December 1895.
