‘To the Memory of an Angel’

Berg's dedication for his violin concerto, composed in 1935 in memory of Manon Gropius, the daughter of Walter Gropius and Mahler's widow, Alma. The work begins with a musical portrait of Manon and ends with an adagio based on the Bach chorale Es ist genug. It was first performed in Barcelona on 19 April 1936, with Louis Krasner and the conductor Hermann Scherchen.

It was first performed in London on 1 May 1936 (conductor Webern).
