'Enigma' Variations

    0.03 sec.

‘Enigma’ Variations

Set of orchestral variations by Edward Elgar, Op. 36, entitled Variations on an Original Theme, composed in 1898 and first performed in London on 19 June 1899, conducted by Hans Richter. Each variation is a musical portrait of some person indicated only by initials or by a nickname, all of whom have, however, been identified. The word ‘Enigma’ appears over the theme. See Cipriani Potter.
