‘First of May, The’

Symphony no. 3 in E flat, Op. 20, by Dmitri Shostakovich. The finale is a choral tribute to International Workers' Day (text by S Kirsanov) but the first performance in Leningrad (St Petersburg), Russia, on 21 January 1930 did not gain official approval. Shostakovich met with further trouble in his next work, Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District, denounced in Pravda and by Stalin.
