XHTML

Latest version of HTML to be released by the W3 Consortium (World Wide Web Consortium). Most of the markup tags that were available in HTML 4.0 are still available in XHTML. The major development is that the entire language has been rewritten in XML (eXtensible Markup Language). The design is modular, with different modules for different classes of markup tags; for example, there are separate modules for form tags, and for frame tags. This modularity means that devices that do not need all the functions of HTML can be designed to handle only the core modules. This makes their programming easier and more compact, and suits the new breed of mobile Web browsers, and devices like TV set-top boxes.

Because XML has been used to design XHTML, Web authors have to be more careful with HTML syntax and presentation; XHTML is case sensitive for example.
