1100–1532South America [administration]The Inca empire dominates the Andes region of South America. Its population numbers as many as 12 million. Incan society is based on a strict hierarchy, with an emperor who rules with absolute power. Their religion is based on sun-worship, and they are skilled builders who create a system of roads and irrigation.
c. 1340–c. 1370Wales [poetry]Welsh writer Dafydd ap Gwilym writes a body of poems – mostly love lyrics and nature poems – which are the highpoint of Welsh Medieval literature.
1348Europe [plagues and epidemics]The Black Death (a form of bubonic plague) spreads in Italy, and into Spain, central and northern France, and southern England, reducing populations by more than half in some parts.

Their groping efforts to better their condition received strong stimulus also from the ravages of the terrible Black Death, a pestilence which, sweeping off at its first visitation, in 1348, at least half the population, and on two later recurrences only smaller proportions, led to a scarcity of laborers and added strength to their demand for commutation of personal services by money-payments and for higher wages.
