1394In computing, high-speed external serial bus system designed to connect computers and consumer electronics devices such as camcorders, digital television sets, DVD players, scanners, and colour printers. One 1394 port can connect up to 63 devices. The development of FireWire was started in the 1990s by Apple Computer. It was finally specified as a standard in 2003 by the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers. The system is also used by Sony Corporation who call it i.Link. 1394 was designed in part to provide a replacement for the SCSI bus and has been widely adopted as a standard connection interface for digital video cameras, but it also has many other applications.
