1550–1600North America, South America, Europe [trade]New agricultural products are exchanged between the New and Old Worlds. The Spanish introduce potatoes, tomatoes, quinine, cocoa, tapioca, and tobacco to Europe. From Europe, the New World gains barley, oats, rye, sugar cane, cattle, pigs, poultry, rabbits, and horses.
c. 1589England [plays]The play The Tragicall History of Doctor Faustus by the English dramatist Christopher Marlowe is first performed, in London, England, played by the Earl of Nottingham's Men (formerly the Admiral's Men). It is first published in 1604.
1589England [songs]The English composer William Byrd publishes Songes of Sundrie Natures, a collection of secular songs.
1589England [thought and scholarship]More Marprelate Tracts (anonymous attacks on English bishops) are published, including Certain Mineral and Metaphysical Schoolpoints and Martin Junior. The first Marprelate Tracts appeared in 1588. Writers such as John Lyly are employed to defend the bishops. John Penry, thought to be the author, is to be executed in 1593.

1 August - 2 August 1589France, Spain [political events]King Henry III of France is stabbed at St Cloud, Paris, France, by Jacques Clément, a fanatical Jacobin monk. On his deathbed the next day he recognizes King Henry of Navarre as his successor. This ends the reign of the House of Valois and inaugurates that of the House of Bourbon. King Philip II of Spain lays claim to the French throne for his daughter Isabella through her mother Elizabeth Valois, Henry III's sister.
