16-bit

In computing, term describing the ability to process 16 bits at a time. The Intel 286 series of microprocessors were examples of 16-bit processors.

The term is used slightly differently to specify the quality of the sound produced by sound cards, where it refers to digital audio resolution; the quality of sound produced by a 16-bit sound card is roughly equivalent to that produced by a compact disc.
