Champion v. Ames

US Supreme Court decision of 1903 that gave judicial sanction to the use of federal police power. Champion, arrested for shipping lottery tickets across state lines, in violation of the Federal Lottery Act 1895, filed suit against the federal government, arguing that the act infringed on the police power of the states. The Court upheld the Lottery Act 5 to 4, ruling that the federal government had the right to use its regulatory and prohibitive powers in the interest of the public good.
