c. 2300 BCBabylon, Egypt [exploration]The Babylonians portray canals, rivers, and surrounding mountains on clay tablets – the first maps. Egyptian map-making is developing at about the same time.
c. 2300 BCEgypt [sculpture]The statue of Egyptian king Pepi I is made using the lost-wax method – the earliest known example of the method. The statue is cast in wax and then covered with a claylike material to form the mould which is then heated to harden it and to melt the wax. The mould is then filled with molten metal.
