256-colour

In computing, term specifying the number of colours that an 8-bit video adapter or VGA screen is able to display simultaneously. The earliest VGA screens could handle only 16 colours. By 1996 most new computer systems came equipped with a video adapter and display that could handle 256 colours, allowing the use of more detailed and complex graphics. The extra depth is useful for applications such as games and multimedia encyclopedias.
