The Senate appoints Hortensius as dictator to deal with the situation, and the Lex Hortensia is passed. This law recognizes the plebiscites (laws passed by the plebeians) of the plebeian tribal assembly as valid and binding on the whole state, without the need for senatorial ratification as previously, so that the will of the people as a whole becomes sovereign. |
