200–700Central America [statistics and demography]The Zapotec site of Monte Albán in Central America is at its peak in this period. It may have had 30,000 or more inhabitants. It is the centre of a complex of public buildings, temples, and dwellings that cover 40 sq km/15 sq mi.
376–378Thrace, Roman Empire [wars]The Visigoths north of the River Danube, defeated by the Huns, are allowed to settle in Roman territory, but revolt and overrun Thrace. The Eastern Roman emperor Valens meets them near Hadrianople, but when he is defeated and killed he leaves Constantinople (modern Istanbul, Turkey) itself in danger from the Goths. The Gothic heavy cavalry proves decisive in the battle.
