3G

Third generation of mobile phone networks. 3G networks arrived in Europe in 2003, with data transmission speeds of up to 2 megabits per second (mbps) per channel. Videoconferencing and video-on-demand are available over 3G, as well as services that utilize its ability to calculate the location of a mobile phone to within a few metres.

MMO2 (formerly BT Wireless) and Manx Telecom launched Europe's first 3G service on the Isle of Man in December 2001. The service used software developed by BT in conjunction with Microsoft and US long-distance telecommunications company AT&T, including business applications giving mobile access to corporate data and consumer programs which provide access to games, books, and music.

The world's first commercial 3G service was launched in Japan in October 2001 by NNT DoCoMo, with a 64 kilobits per second (kbps) videophone service, and a 384 kbps Internet service.
