c. 900 BCc. 500 BCCentral America [everyday life]La Venta becomes the major centre of the second phase of Olmec civilization in Mexico. The site of San Lorenzo is abandoned, possibly in a violent overthrow of the local elite, or possibly for religious reasons. La Venta is a ceremonial or elite centre, supported by a large agricultural population. It has a large main pyramid in addition to smaller ones.
c. 600 BCc. 480 BCGreece [sculpture]The Greek Archaic period of sculpture is evident, a typical form being the kouros, a rigid freestanding nude.
594 BCGreece [legislation]In the Greek city-state of Athens, the statesman Solon is appointed archon with unlimited powers. He lays down new laws and a constitution, which end the practice of selling bad debtors into slavery and make a compulsory reduction in all debts. The reforms also include opening the Assembly to the lowest classes, the codification of the law, democratic reforms in the law courts, and a system of appointment to office by the drawing of lots amongst all citizens.
