755China, Tang Empire [wars]The threat of frequent invasions by the Tibetans and steppe nomads leads to a build-up of the Chinese army and an increase in the power of the military governors, culminating in the rebellion of An Lushan, a general of Turkish origin. He seizes the capital Siking (modern Xian), forcing Emperor Xuanzong to flee. Shortly after he is forced to abdicate in favour of his son, Suzong.
