7 July 817Arab Caliphate [political events]In an attempt to end the factional rivalry of the Sunni Muslims and breakaway minority Shiite Muslims, the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun appoints Ali al-Rida, leader of the Shiites, as his heir. This proves unacceptable to the Sunnite majority, however, and a revolt breaks out in Baghdad (in modern Iraq).
