825Wessex, Mercia, England [wars]In one of the most important battles in English history, King Egbert of Wessex defeats King Beornwulf of Mercia at Ellandun (now Nether Wroughton, Wiltshire). Later the same year, Beornwulf is killed when the East Anglians rebel against Mercian control and Egbert conquers Kent, Sussex, and Essex, making Wessex the strongest Anglo-Saxon kingdom.
