900–1000Pacific [colonization]The Polynesian ancestors of the Maori people discover and begin the settlement of New Zealand.
907China, Tang Empire [wars]The Chinese warlord Zhuwen deposes Aidi, the last Tang dynasty emperor, and declares himself Chinese emperor. The Tang empire collapses and China fragments into 11 warring states, beginning the ‘Period of the Five Dynasties and the Ten Kingdoms’ (907–960). Zhuwen and his successors, styled the Later Liang dynasty, establish control over the Chang Jiang Basin, the richest region of China.
