Munn v. Illinois

US Supreme Court decision (one of the ‘Granger Cases’) of 1877 dealing with state regulation of industry. The owners of Illinois grain elevators filed suit against the state legislature over an 1873 law, which established maximum legal rates for grain storage. The petitioners claimed that this populist legislation interfered with federal regulation of interstate commerce and violated the due process clause. The Court voted 7 to 2 to uphold the Illinois law, ruling that it was a legitimate use of state police power in the public interest.
