artificial life

In computing, area of scientific research that attempts to simulate biological phenomena via computer programs. The first ALife workshop was held at Los Alamos, USA, in 1987. Research in this area is being conducted all around the world; important centres are the Santa Fe Institute and the MIT Media Lab.
