Russell

Old whaling port in northern North Island, New Zealand, on the northeast coast of the Auckland peninsula. Originally named Kororareka, it is the site of the oldest permanent European settlement in New Zealand, having its origins as a whaling port, missionary station, and British army garrison. It was renamed in 1840 after Lord John Russell, then secretary of state for the colonies, when it became the first centre of government, until Auckland was made the capital in 1841.

Russell was the site of numerous Maori protests against British occupation, particularly of Hone Heke, a chief who cut down the flagstaff at Maiki Hill four times during 1844–45.

Russell
