advanced gas-cooled reactor

Type of nuclear reactor formerly favoured in Western Europe. The AGR uses a fuel of enriched uranium dioxide in stainless-steel cladding and a moderator of graphite. Carbon dioxide gas is pumped through the reactor core to extract the heat produced by the fission of the uranium. The heat is transferred to water in a steam generator, and the steam drives a turbogenerator to produce electricity. The PWR (pressurized water reactor) is now more prevalent than the AGR.
