Almetyevsk

Town in the Republic of Tatarstan in the western Russian Federation; population (1996 est) 139,000. The city lies some 225 km/140 mi southeast of Kazan, and is at the centre of a major oil-producing region. It has a refinery, oil pipelines to Perm and Nizhniy-Novgorod, and a gas pipeline to Kazan and Nizhniy-Novgorod.
