Aarau

Commune and capital of the Swiss canton of Aargau, on the River Aar, 35 km/22 mi west of Zürich; population (1995) 15,900. Silk, leather, cotton goods, and mathematical instruments are made in the town.

The assembly of the diet of the cantons met at Aarau in 1798 and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic, of which Aarau became the capital for a short time.
