Abacos

Group of islands in the northern Bahamas, comprising Great Abaco - population (1990) 10,100 - Little Abaco, and a number of keys (small, low-lying islands of sand and coral fragments); area 963 sq km/372 sq mi. The largest town in the group is Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco, and the largest town on Little Abaco is Fox Town. Tourism is an important industry.

The islands are heavily forested, and the native pine trees are used for building Abaco pine boats. Planned migration to Great Abaco took place in the 1970s.
