Abancay

Town and capital of the department of Apurímac in Peru, situated in a valley of the Andes 250 km/155 mi west of Cuzco; area 313.07 sq km/120.88 sq mi; population (1996) 53,838. Abancay stands at an altitude of 2,377 m/7,798 ft and is a mining and sugar-processing centre.
