Abbé

French title of respect used to address any priest who is not a member of a religious order.

Before the French Revolution it was applied to many people who had little or no connection with the church, but who acted as tutors, professors, and men of letters. Abbés commendataires were people who received revenues from the monasteries, but who were not necessarily monks.
