Abbeyfeale

Market town in County Limerick, Republic of Ireland, on the River Feale, 19 km/12 mi southwest of Newcastle West; population (2002) 2,300. There are electrical and large automotive-component manufacturers here. The River Feale offers salmon and trout fishing.

Abbeyfeale was the site of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey, part of the ruins of which are now incorporated into the Catholic church there. The ruined Portrinand Castle, 2 km/1.5 mi to the northwest, is a former 14th century Geraldine stronghold. The major feature of the town's square is a statue of William Casey, parish priest 1883–1907, who helped the tenant farmers in their struggle against landlords, and who formed the first Land League group (a peasant-rights organization) outside County Mayo.
