Abbeyleix

Town in County Laois, Republic of Ireland, 14 km/9 mi south of Portlaoise; population (2002) 2,400. It is a centre for golf and fishing on the River Nore and its tributaries. Abbeyleix takes its name from the vanished Cistercian abbey De Lege Dei, founded in 1183.

Abbeyleix was an 18th-century planned estate town, built by Viscount de Vesci. It was originally a village on marshy ground, and de Vesci moved the entire town to its present location. It is the first example of a planned town in Ireland.

The Abbeyleix carpet factory opened in 1904 but closed in 1912. It produced carpets for the Titanic. The Abbeyleix Heritage Interpretive Centre is located in Heritage House.
