Abbottabad

Town in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan, situated in the hills at an altitude of 1,256 m/4,120 ft, 55 km/34 mi north of Islamabad; population (1998 est) 106,000. Founded in 1853, it was named after a British Army officer. It was once a military settlement, but is now a summer resort and serves as the gateway to the scenic Kagan Valley.

Abbottabad has a forest research centre, as well as several colleges affiliated to the University of Peshawar.
