Abbotsford

Home of Scottish novelist Walter Scott from 1811, on the right bank of the River Tweed, Borders region, Scotland. Originally a farmhouse, it was rebuilt 1817–25 as a Gothic baronial hall, and is still in the possession of his descendants.

Abbotsford

Town in the Central Fraser Valley Regional District, southwest British Columbia, Canada; population (1991) 18,900. It is situated to the south of the Fraser River, 68 km/42 mi east-southeast of Vancouver and 10 km/6 mi north of the Washington border. A railway and road junction, it has traditionally engaged in dairying, clay quarrying, brickmaking, and the production of strawberries, hops, and raspberries, but is increasingly industrial and suburban. The Abbotsford International Air Show is held in Matsqui every August.

It was at Abbotsford that Scott made his home for the rest of his life.
In 1811 he moved from the comparatively modest country house which he had been occupying to the estate of Abbotsford, where he proceeded to fulfill his ambition of building a great mansion and making himself a sort of feudal chieftain.
