Abd-ar-Rahmān I (731–788)

Emir of Córdoba 756–88. Under his leadership Moorish Spain (al-Andalus) flourished as an emirate independent of the Ummayad caliphs of Baghdad, and the foundations were laid that were to make Córdoba the cultural and intellectual capital of Europe in the 9th and 10th centuries.

A member of the Ummayad dynasty, which was ousted from power in Damascus by the Abbasids 750, Abd-ar-Rahmān escaped and after a series of adventures reached southern Spain. He seized control of Córdoba from the Yamanites 755–56 and was successful in pacifying the warring factions of al-Andalus.
