Abd-ar-Rahman II (788–852)

Emir of Córdoba 822–52. Under his leadership, Moorish Spain underwent a marked Islamization, and acquired the accumulated learning of the ancients and of India from the caliphate of Baghdad, one of the most influential figures in this movement being the Persian musician and scientist Ziryab. A reaction against Islam by the Christians of Córdoba led to martyrdoms at the hands of their Moorish rulers.
