Abdera

Town in ancient Thrace on the Aegean Sea (now in ruins); the birthplace of the philosopher Democritus and the sophist Protagoras. Its inhabitants had a reputation for stupidity, and ‘Abderite’ became a term for a simpleton. The site is occupied by the modern town of Avdhira, Greece.
