Ibrahim, Abdullah (1934–1990)

South African pianist and composer. He first performed in the USA in 1965 and had a great influence on the fusion of African rhythms with American jazz. His compositions range from songs to large works for orchestra.

He grew up in Cape Town and in 1963 was discovered by Duke Ellington, who was a major influence on his music. After moving to New York City and converting to Islam, Ibrahim increasingly incorporated African influences into his complex style of jazz.
